Layering photographs and documents from Italy’s National Oil Company (ENI) with excerpts from texts—such as Aime Cesaire’s Discourse On Colonialism and Giulia Scotto’s Between Visible and Invisible: ENI and the Building of the African Petroleumscape—the three light boxes of Re-Readings reflect on the interplay between the company’s industrial ambitions and its employment of neo-colonial strategies in recently independent or decolonised countries in Africa and West Asia. The work examines ENI’s extensive role in “The Big Africa Project” to supply Italian factories with African oil reserves and to prolong a substantial colonial presence abroad.
